In golf, women tee off from ahead of the men. In tennis, they play fewer sets.The tennis thing doesn’t make sense, but the golf thing does. Women sports are often handicapped to compensate for the undeniable physical diifferences between us. Your point is extremely valid, that you love the game for what it is. You are a purist as are its core fans. The people who watch it don’t care about dunks, they appreciate the skills used to compensate for the fact they can’t slam. It’s fine the way it is. Unfortunately, people really really like to see someone dunk and go “AHHHHH!” while they hang over someone and stare down with mighty defiance. They’re trying to make an immediate impact on viewership, and the only way to do that is something drastic. Dunking changed men’s basketball, too. That being said, it’s a stupid idea, but I think for a different reason. Lowering the rim means that every woman who has learned to play on a 10ft hoop (like every woman basketball player) would have to rebuild their shooting mechanics. It’s too drastic and doesn’t just add an element (dunking), but changes the entire sport, offense and defense, and its players will basically have to re-learn everything on a dime, rather than over the course of a sport’s natural evolution. I like to look at woman’s basketball like what the NBA was like before Bill Russell. One day, women dunking on a 10ft hoop will be commonplace. The sport is young, will continue to evolve and you can’t drop a major change on a sport like this. Women haven’t been playing sports as long as men, either, and like every sport, man or woman’s, the players will continue to get better and achieve things we don’t think are possible. I’ll be shocked if they do it. I don’t think it’s going to happen.
